Justin Jefferson Unleashes 5 Fresh Takes on ‘The Griddy’ Touchdown Dance!

“We are bringing a new version of the Griddy this year,” announced Jefferson. Justin Jefferson, along with the creator of “The Griddy” dance, has unveiled fresh iterations of the dance that Jefferson made famous with his touchdown celebrations for the Minnesota Vikings.

“This year, we are introducing an exciting new version of the Griddy. It’s going to be a season filled with electrifying Griddy moments. I want the entire stadium, and fans worldwide, to join me in getting up and doing the Griddy when I reach the end zone,” expressed Jefferson in a video released by the Vikings.

The video showcases Allen Davis, the creator of the Griddy, teaching Jefferson the new moves at the indoor practice field located at the TCO Performance Center in Eagan, Minnesota. There are multiple captivating versions of the dance to look forward to.

  • The Jet Griddy
  • The Handoff Griddy
  • The Monopoly Griddy
  • The Reverse Griddy
  • The LeBron Griddy

The Jet Griddy is essentially Jefferson performing the standard Griddy dance move, but with his arms extended wide like an airplane, paying homage to his nickname, “Jet.”

In the Handoff Griddy, Jefferson executes the typical footwork while having the option to choose to accept a handoff or pass the ball to a teammate, who then seamlessly continues the dance routine.

The Monopoly Griddy incorporates the standard footwork, but Jefferson mimics the act of rolling dice, adding a playful element to the use and enhancing the quality of performance.

With the Reverse Griddy, Jefferson once again performs the usual footwork, but now he simulates driving a car and shifts into reverse, executing the dance moves in a backward motion.

In the LeBron Griddy, Jefferson emulates the iconic powder toss gesture that LeBron James famously performs at the scorer’s table before every game. With a flourish, Jefferson pretends to sprinkle the powder into his hands and then releases it into the air.

“Alright, those are the fresh Griddy moves for the season,” Jefferson exclaimed. “You’ve gotta join us and get Griddy!”

The Griddy dance origin: How Justin Jefferson started a new NFL TD celebration craze

The NFL is often referred to as a copycat league, and this sentiment holds true in various aspects. From playcalling to schemes and even touchdown celebrations, there has been a long-standing tradition of borrowing ideas.

One particular celebration that gained popularity in 2022 is the “Griddy”. Players like Stefon Diggs, Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Adam Thielen, and Kirk Cousins, among others, have embraced this shuffling touchdown celebration after witnessing its introduction to the NFL by Vikings wideout Jefferson in 2020. Who started the Griddy dance?

Although the Griddy originated as an LSU phenomenon, it quickly spread like wildfire, captivating not only the NFL but also the world beyond. Let’s delve into its origins:

Allen Davis, a friend of former LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase from Louisiana, ingeniously created the Griddy dance as his distinctive rhythmic form of self-expression. Drawing inspiration from the Nae Nae craze during the mid-2010s, Davis crafted a dance that exudes creativity and individuality, showcasing his unique flair. Davis created a dance which was later posted on Snapchat by one of his friends. The next morning, he was flooded with videos of people imitating his dance. When Chase arrived at LSU, he introduced the dance to his teammate Justin Jefferson, who then spread it to the entire LSU locker room. Jefferson showcased the dance on a national stage during his sophomore season in 2019 when he had a remarkable game against Texas, recording 163 yards and three touchdowns. After scoring his first touchdown, Jefferson delighted the world by performing the Griddy dance.

The dance entails a series of effortless and uncomplicated movements: tapping your heels together, showcasing your “Bs” (your “big billionaire” glasses), and swaying your arms rhythmically from side to side. The Griddy has not only taken the sports world by storm but has also captivated the imagination of many others. So much so, that in 2020, the popular video game “Fortnite” even introduced it as one of its emotes.

How to do the Griddy moves

For your entertainment, here is a step-by-step breakdown of how to do the Griddy:

  1. Achieve a touchdown.
  2. Alternate tapping your heels, starting with the left foot and then the right.
  3. Form the “OK” symbol with your hands (make a B!), then, while keeping the rhythm (which could be tricky for some), lift them up to your eyes as if wearing imaginary goggles.
  4. Swing your arms back and forth and across.
  5. Repeat the sequence.
