Khamzat Khizarovich Chimaev, also known as Хизаран Хамзат in Chechen and Хамзат Хизарович Чимаев in Russian was born on 1 May 1994. He is a professional mixed martial artist and freestyle wrestler from Sweden, competing in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Before joining the UFC, Chimaev competed in the Brave Combat Federation. He is a three-time Swedish National champion in wrestling.
As of 9 May 2023, Chimaev holds the #4 ranking in the UFC welterweight division. He has an older brother named Artur, who is also involved in freestyle wrestling. Chimaev represented Sweden in MMA competitions and moved to Kalmar at 19. Notably, he bears a scar on his lip from a childhood accident on concrete stairs, which impaired his ability to breathe through one nostril. Before embarking on a professional fighting career, Chimaev worked at a poultry factory in Kalmar and also engaged in security work.
He honed his skills at various clubs in Sweden, including BK Athén, and is widely acclaimed as one of the nation’s premier freestyle wrestlers. Chimaev’s prowess shone through as he clinched gold medals at the Swedish Freestyle National Championships in 2016 and 2017 in the 86-kilogram category and in 2018 in the 92-kilogram category. Chimaev has also participated in judo tournaments and combat sambo fights.
On 19 November 2021, Chimaev faced off against fellow UFC contender Jack Hermansson in a freestyle wrestling match at Bulldog Fight Night 9 in Sweden, emerging victorious on points. He began training in MMA at 23 and teaches at the Allstar Training Center in Stockholm alongside notable fighters such as Alexander Gustafsson, Ilir Latifi, and Reza Madadi. Gustafsson, one of Chimaev’s main training partners, praised his skills and described him as one of the best fighters he has ever trained with during a press conference in June 2019.
