Jonathan Dwight Jones, born July 19, 1987, is an exceptional American mixed martial artist. He competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and holds the prestigious title of UFC Heavyweight Champion. With a professional career dating back to 2008, Jones has achieved remarkable success as a two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, reigning from March 2011 to April 2015 and from December 2018 to August 2020. In 2016, he also held the interim UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Notably, as of March 7, 2023, he ranks as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC men’s division.
At 23, Jones made history by becoming the youngest champion in UFC. His victory over Maurício Rua began an impressive career, filled with numerous records in the light heavyweight division. Jones has established himself as a dominant force in the UFC with the most title defenses, wins, and longest win streak. Throughout his championship reign, he has been widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Despite an unfortunate and disputed disqualification against Matt Hamill, Jones has never been stopped or outscored in his professional career. His legacy as a remarkable fighter remains unblemished.
From 2015 to 2017, Jones was embroiled in numerous controversies, losing his title three times due to disciplinary measures. The first instance occurred in 2015 when the UFC stripped him of his title and removed him from the official rankings following his arrest on felony hit-and-run charges. Despite subsequent comebacks in 2016 and 2017, where he emerged victorious in title bouts against Ovince Saint Preux and Daniel Cormier, Jones’ triumphs were short-lived. He tested positive for banned substances, leading to further suspensions and the latter being declared a ‘no contest.’ After his suspension was lifted in 2017, Jones returned triumphantly, reclaiming the championship in 2018 by defeating Alexander Gustafsson. However, in 2020, amidst a pay dispute with UFC President Dana White, Jones voluntarily relinquished the title with intentions of moving up to the heavyweight division. In a remarkable comeback in 2023, after a hiatus of over three years, Jones secured the UFC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Ciryl Gane. Widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists in history, this sentiment is echoed by Dana White himself.
