There is a chance that the 2023 season could be full of disasters for the Las Vegas Raiders. Las Vegas is already projected to be one of the worst teams in all of football next season, however, things may end up going from bad to worse for them.
They made a splash in free agency by signing Jimmy Garoppolo to a three-year $72.75 million contract. This came shortly after their former quarterback Derek Carr signed a deal with the New Orleans Saints. This was a puzzling move for the Raiders as Garoppolo was coming off of a serious foot injury and lost his starting job last season.
However, due to an interesting clause in his contract, there is a chance that the Raiders could end up cutting him before he even gets a chance to take a snap for the team. This clause was deemed “Addendum G” in the contract, and it likely came as a result of Garoppolo being forced to undergo surgery in March to attempt to repair his foot.
Addendum G states that Jimmy G acknowledges that he will not be able to pass the physical that he underwent when first signing with the team due to his foot injury. Along with this, it also states that Garoppolo understands and takes liability for the risk of further injury. This even includes what the contract defines as “permanent disability”. The most important piece of Addendum G says that the Raiders can terminate the contract for any reason related to the terms stated in Addendum G.
While this clause in the contract could go on to save the Raiders millions of dollars, this would still leave the team in a terrible place for the 2023 season. Currently, Las Vegas has Brian Hoyer, Aidan O’Connell, and Chase Garbers to round out their quarterback depth chart. All these players are either well past their prime or very unproven.
With some very talented pieces on the team, this leaves the Raiders in a very odd spot. While they could begin a massive rebuild, and look to capitalize on what many believe will be a loaded 2024 draft class, this may be easier said than done. While it will not be too difficult to trade players like Devante Adams, and Max Crosby, their star running back Josh Jacobs could be very tough to trade.
This is no slight to Jacobs as he was one of the best backs in the entire league in the 2022 season. However, there is no market for running backs in today’s NFL. Over the offseason Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler requested a trade from his team after failing to receive a contract extension, however, there were no buyers for one of the most talented backs in the NFL.
If surgery goes smoothly, and Garoppolo has a quick recovery, there is a strong chance that the Raiders attempt to get through the season with Jimmy G as their quarterback. However, if he fails his physical coming into the season, there is a strong chance that they cut him and begin a full-scale rebuild.
