The Chicago Bears have the potential to be a great team this season. After having a very forgettable season in 2022 in which they landed the first overall pick, they are looking very promising heading into 2023.
Chicago would flip the first overall pick to the Carolina Panthers for D.J. Moore, the 9th and 61st overall picks in the 2023 draft, Carolina’s 2024 first-round pick, and their 2025 second-round pick. They would then trade the 9th overall pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for 10th overall pick in 2023, and a Eagles 4th rounder in 2024.
With a new number-one receiver in Moore, this could be a breakout season for both Justin Fields and Darnell Mooney. This will be the best-receiving core that Fields has had to work with in his NFL career, and Mooney will benefit from teams being forced to put their best cornerback on Moore. This could cause him to have the best season of his already impressive young career.
Mooney is ready to prove himself in 2023. He appeared on the St. Brown brothers podcast “The 33rd Team” when asked about his outlook on the season, he was quoted as saying, “Do whatever I can do for my team… I mean ball out, of course. Dominate. Not really on the “respect my name” anymore. I’m just disrespecting everybody now. I don’t really care about respect no more. Other than that, I just want to win”.
Last season, Mooney struggled to stay on the field and missed five of the team’s seventeen games. Despite this, he still ended the season with 40 receptions for 493 yards and two touchdowns. This is a tough look compared to his 2021 showing of 81 receptions for 1055 yards and four touchdowns. However, Mooney received over double the targets in the 2021 season. With him set to match up against much less talented defensive backs than he did in 2022 paired with Chicago likely leaning more on Fields in the passing game rather than relying on his legs, this could be a great comeback season and potentially a second break-out season for Mooney.
