Top Three Running Back Rooms In the NFL Heading Into the 2023 Season

Over the offseason, there was seemingly a leaguewide agreement that the running back position would no longer be paid as well as it previously was. As a result of this, players like Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook were cut from their teams while Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley were franchise tagged. Despite the disrespect that the position receiver, there are three teams with running back rooms that stand out amongst the rest of the league.

1. San Francisco 49ers

The title of best running back room in the NFL belongs to the San Francisco 49ers. They have arguably the best and most versatile back in the league in Christian McCafferty, however, this is only the tip of the iceberg for San Francisco’s backs. At the backup spot, they have Elijah Mitchell who would be more than capable of being a starting back for a handful of teams.

Along with this, the 49ers have a coaching staff that is extremely resourceful with how they use their offensive weapons. As a result of this star wide receiver Deebo Samuel also spends some time at the running back position. With so many talented players and endless possibilities of how the 49ers use the running back position, they are the clear choice for the best-running back room in the NFL.

2. Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have arguably the most potential out of any running back room in the NFL. They found a diamond in the rough after selecting Allegeier in the 5th round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He would go on to have a 1000-yard season on the ground as a rookie. However, the Falcons were not done with bulking up their running back room. In the 2023 draft, they would select Bijan Robinson with the 8th overall pick.

While Allgeier would have likely been enough to get the Falcons through the season, Robinson elevates the Falcons to be one of the strongest teams at the running back position in the league. While he has not yet taken a single snap in the NFL, many are already ranking him as a top-ten back in the league.

With the Falcons likely not having the strongest passing game this year, it is good that they have such talent and depth at the running back position.

3. Cleveland Browns

Despite letting Kareem Hunt walk in free agency and losing D’Earnest Johnson, the Cleveland Browns still have a top-three running back room in the league. Nick Chubb is rivaling Derrick Henry and Christian McCafferty as the best backs in the league. However, he is not the only bright spot at the position for Cleveland heading into the 2023 season.

Despite not getting much of an opportunity to put his talents on display in the 2022 season, Jerome Ford is set to have a breakout season in 2023. Chubb has struggled at times with injuries as a result of the immense amount of carries that he has a year in and out. Ford will have a chance to have a real impact on the team this season and he is more than capable of putting the league on notice.
