Leonard Fournette has been one of the many casualties of the sudden devaluation of the running back position in the 2023 off-season. Since the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, Dalvin Cook, Ezekiel Elliott, and Leonard Fournette were cut from their teams. Along with this, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs were placed on the franchise tag.
It appears as if the front offices throughout the NFL have come to the conclusion that they are done giving running backs large contracts and would rather go with cheaper backups or draft new backs who can play on rookie deals. Last season, Fournette ran for 668 yards and three touchdowns with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would eventually end up being benched before the end of the regular season, and the team would cut him in the offseason. It is very hard to believe that his NFL career will come to an end after only six seasons in the league, and there are three teams that would be great landing spots for him in the 2023 season.
The first team that could use Fournette is the Denver Broncos. There is a good chance that if Javonte Williams makes his return in week one of the regular season, he still will not be 100% recovered from an devastating injury that cut his 2022 season short. Williams suffered a torn ACL, LCL, and PLC in his right knee. Sadly, an injury of this caliber could mean that he is never the same caliber of running back again, and the recovery process is something that can not be rushed.
If the Broncos were to sign Fournette, it would allow Williams to take his time and come back only when he is healthy. With Denver likely being a pass-oriented offense through the season, Fourtnette would be more than capable of holding down the starting running back position until Williams returns. Once he is back from his injury, Fournette could be one of the most elite backup options in the league.
Another team that is in dire need of a workhorse back is the Miami Dolphins. Currently, the team is in hot pursuit of Dalvin Cook to fill the starting running back position, however, if they strike out on adding him to their roster, Fournette could serve as a very solid alternative.
Miami will likely once again be a pass-dominant offense in the 2023 season with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in another prove-it year and the team featuring one of the most elite wide receiver duos in the league in Tyreek Hill and Jaylin Waddle. Fournette would not have to be the dominant back he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars to fulfill what the team would need from him.
The final landing spot for Fournette would be to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While he has had issues with the coaching staff throughout his stint with the team if he is willing to accept a backup role with the team, the roster could use him.
With the addition of Baker Mayfield, the team will greatly struggle through the air and will be forced to heavily rely on the rushing attack. Despite not having a strong roster coming into the year, the NFC South is still a winnable division for them. If Fournette can come out strong at the beginning of the year, there is a chance that he would be able to reclaim his starting spot.
