With the 2023 regular season just around the corner, three head coaches come in as the best that the league has to offer.
Andy Reid clocks in as the top head coach heading into the 2023 season. He is coming off of his second Super Bowl victory with the Kansas City Chiefs and the third in his head coaching career. Despite the Chiefs having a weaker roster compared to recent years, they were able to overcome the odds and win it all.
While it helps to have players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce on the roster, Reid’s incredible playcalling sets his star players up to shine. With more success on the horizon, the other 31 head coaches have some catching up to do before they dethrone Reid.
Bill Belichick’s placement on this list is more or less a legacy award. He has coached the Patriots to six Super Bowl victories and has been named the league’s coach of the year three times.
While his New England Patriots will likely be nowhere near competing for a Super Bowl this season, this is through no fault of Belichick. After the departure of Tom Brady from the franchise, the team has struggled to rebuild and find someone they can be confident in as a successor.
With New England being arguably the most competitive division in the entire league heading into the 2023 season, there is a strong chance they once again will miss the postseason. However, this does not take away anything from Belichick. If any other coach were in his spot, the Patriots would be nowhere near as good of a spot as they currently find themselves.
Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers have a chance of making a Super Bowl run in the 2023 season. As long as they are able to remain healthy, there are more than enough weapons for a coach of Shanahan’s caliber to make a deep run in the postseason.
He has been an innovator as an offensive play caller, bringing out unique sets and trick plays to keep opposing defenses on their toes. Despite having a revolving door at the quarterback position recently, Shanahan’s elite play calling has allowed the 49ers to still be very strong on the offensive side of the ball.
