Heading into the 2023 NFL season, there are three head coaches that rank amongst the worst in the league. These coaches are coming into the year on the hot seat, and if they are unable to turn things around this year, there is a chance that they could end up being fired. While some of them can not be blamed for the poor performances of their subpar rosters, the consistent losing earns them a spot on this list nonetheless.
Matt Eberflus is set to begin his second year as a head coach in the 2023 season. Eberflus led the Chicago Bears to a 3-14 record in his first season as a head coach. He can not take all of the blame for this league’s worst record. The Bears are in the middle of a long-term rebuild that they hope to put to an end this season.
However, with the team still lacking a lot of talent in very important positions, there is a strong chance that they once again will struggle this coming season. Eberflus is a defensive-minded head coach, but this did not aid the Bears and they would finish the 2022 season with the worst defense in the league. As the roster continues to improve, hopefully, Eberflus will get more of an opportunity to coach his team to wins, however, if things do not turn around quickly, he may be let go before the roster is truly ready to compete.
Arthur Smith is heading into his third season s the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. In both of his previous seasons with the team, Smith has led the team to 7-10 records. While this may seem like a record that should make him exempt from a list like this, that is far from the case. Smith has had the privilege of coaching in the NFC South, arguably the least competitive division in the entire league.
Not many great things can be said about Smith’s coaching philosophy outside of his creativity in the run game. He has made incredible use of Cordalle Patterson as a hybrid between a wide receiver and a running back. With the NFC South once again set to be a division up for grabs, Smith could shock the NFL world and lead his team to the postseason for the first time in his career.
The 2023 season is set to be Josh McDaniels’ fourth season as a head coach. He spent two seasons as the head coach of the Denver Broncos in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, however, he would not receive another opportunity to take a head coaching role until twelve years later with the Las Vegas Raiders. During his time with the Broncos, McDaniels coached his team to an 11-17 record, and last season, the Raiders finished the year with a 6-11 record.
In his three seasons as a head coach, McDaniels has yet to have a winning season, and that trend likely will not change in the 2023 season. While he did see some success as an offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, this has not translated as a head coach.
