The NFL unveiled its five international games for the 2023 season. The first matchup takes place in week four between the Atlanta Falcons and the Jacksonville Jaguars. In week five the Jaguars take on the Buffalo Bills. Week six pits the Baltimore Ravens against the Tennessee Titans. After a three-week gap, the Miami Dolphins face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in week nine. The final international game takes place in week ten between the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots. The games will be split up between London, the United Kingdom, and Germany. 1. Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs
The top international matchup this season comes between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs. This will be a great game between two very high-powered offenses. Along with this, it will be the first time that wide receiver Tyreek Hill faces off against his former team. Last season, both Mahomes and Hill had career years in their first year on separate teams.
The Chiefs are coming off of their second Super Bowl of the Patrick Mahomes era after they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. Mahomes made it clear that he is head and shoulders above any other quarterback in the league. This may have been one of the weakest rosters he has had in years, and he still was able to lead his team to a Lombardi Trophy. The Dolphins passing attack quickly became one of the best in the league. Hill led the league in receiving yards, and if quarterback Tua Tagoviola was able to play through the entirety of the season, he would have likely finished near the top of the league in terms of passing yards. The Dolphins have a very high-powered offense and one of the fastest units in the league. On the defensive end, they made a major move to trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. This move greatly bulked up Maimi’s secondary, and they will need all the help they can in this matchup against Mahomes.
2. Baltimore Ravens vs. Tennessee Titans
The second-best international game in the 2023 season takes place in week six between the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans. This will likely be a very old-fashioned game where both teams will emphasize running the ball and playing hard-nosed defense.
The Baltimore Ravens spent most of their offseason attempting to court quarterback Lamar Jackson to sign a long-term contract to stay with the team. After signing Odell Beckham Jr. and using their first-round draft pick to select wide receiver Zay Flowers, they eventually convinced Jackson to sign a five-year $260 million contract, which made him the highest-paid player in the league. Despite adding to their receiving core, the Ravens will still likely be a run-oriented team. Despite his leaps of growth as a passer, Jackson’s most valuable asset that sets him apart from any other quarterback in the league is his ability to scramble and make defenders miss.
The Tennessee Titans did not make any major moves over the offseason and are in a very weird spot as an organization. It is clear that the Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill era has come to an end in Tennessee. Rumors swirled over the offseason about both players being shopped on the trade market. The Titans are attempting to transition into a rebuilding era, however, they have been unable to find teams willing to trade for their veteran impact players. As a result of this, we can expect more of the same for them as a team. Offensively, this means Henry dominating on the ground and doing everything in his power to carry his team to a win.
If both teams are healthy, there is a strong chance that the Ravens win this game quite easily. However, it will be a great game to watch for any fan that misses the old-school style of football. Both of these teams have incredible rushing attacks and solid defenses.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills
The third-best international matchup comes between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills. These are both teams that could make some real noise this season and are currently favored to win their respective divisions.
The Jaguars caught fire at the tail end of the regular season and were able to slip into the playoffs. While many did not expect much from them in the postseason, they were able to very impressively claw back from a 27-0 deficit against the Los Angeles Chargers. In the second round, they gave the Kansas City Chiefs all they could handle before ultimately being sent home by the eventual Super Bowl champions by a final score of 27-20. Trevor Lawrence had a breakout season and could make another big jump in 2023. The team will get the chance to feature Calvin Ridley Jr. who is returning after a year-long suspension after being caught gambling on NFL games. This could end up being one of the top quarterback-receiver duos in the league next season.
The Bills have been one of the top teams in the league for the bulk of the Josh Allen era, however, they have been unable to get over the hump and make a Super Bowl appearance. Once again, they are entering the season with a very elite and well-rounded roster. While they are a pass-dominant offense, this could end up being a breakout season for running back James Cook after a solid rookie season.
If the Bills are able to contain the Jaguars’ passing attack in this game, there is a strong chance they will be able to handily win this game. While Jacksonville will be a very exciting team next season, they still have a ways to go before they are true Super Bowl contenders like the Bills.
