The NFL logo is one of the most recognizable in the world. Throughout the illustrious history of the league, the logo has undergone a handful of redesigns, but for the most part has not seen many major changes made to it.
The first logo came to be in the 1920s and it featured the iconic shield and stars that fans know today. However, this logo also featured stripes that made the logo closely resemble features of the American flag.
The first major redesign of the notorious logo came in the 1940s. The main adjustments made were switching the color of the stripes and ball featured in the logo to pink. In 1962, the stripes would eventually be removed from the logo so it would not look as cluttered and be easier for fans to recognize.
The logo would go unchanged until 1983. Even then, only a minor change would be made to the iconic logo. While the logo from 1983 may look almost identical to its predecessor, the outer border of the shield in the logo was made thicker while the ball in the top section of the logo was also changed.
The final rendition of the NFL logo that we know today was created by the NFL’s in-house marketing team. This team was headed by Lisa Baird who at the time served as the NFL Senior Vice President of marketing. The major changes made in this version of the logo cut the number of stars from twenty-five to only eight. Along with this, the football featured in the upper section of the logo would have its design and position changed. The final adjustment made by Baird and the marketing team would be removing the curve in the l, giving the lettering a more blocky and official look.
There is a strong chance that we will not see any further revisions to the logo for a long time. The NFL has established itself as the most popular sports league in America and is making strides in reaching a national audience. With the logo being one of the most recognizable in the world, it would take a lot for the league to make any major changes to it once again.
