With the NFL regular season right around the corner, fans around the world are chomping at the bit for the 2023 season to kick off. This is an incredibly exciting year for the league with a handful of teams that are more than capable of making Super Bowl runs.
The regular season will kick off on September 7th at 8:30 PM between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions. These are two teams that are poised to make it to the playoffs this season. While this may not be a big feat for the Chiefs, if the Lions can pull it off, it would be the first time that they have made it to the postseason since 2016.
Detroit was one of the most active teams in the offseason. After a very promising tail end of the 2022 regular season where the team would come just short of making the playoffs, the Lions’ front office would go all in to build a team around their elite offense. Shockingly, the team would move on from reliable running back D’Andre Swift and chose to replace with him, Jahmyr Gibbs who they selected with the 12th overall pick.
While he will not be able to join the team since week seven due to a gambling suspension, Jameson Williams could end up having a huge impact on the team. He had a slow start to his NFL career after entering the league coming off of a torn ACL. In the six games that he was able to suit up for, Williams would only catch one of his nine targets. However, he would make the most of his single catch on the season, it being a 41-yard touchdown reception.
Along with the new additions to the offense, there have been some key pickups made to the Lions’ secondary as well. They were able to sign both C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Cameron Sutton. Both will bring some much-needed help to the team’s secondary, and with them on the roster, it will be very difficult for teams to keep up with Detroit’s high-powered passing game.
However, if there is one team in the league that can win a shootout with anyone it is the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will for the most part be running back the same roster that they won the 2022 Super Bowl with. Last season, Patrick Mahomes proved that it did not matter who he had in his receiving room, as long as he had Travis Kelce on the field, he would still be leaps and bounds in front of any other quarterback in the league.
With Kansas City’s young defensive pieces stepping up and playing as a very solid unit last season, there is a strong chance that they make a big jump in the 2023 season. Even with all of the additions that the Lions made over the offseason, it likely still will not be enough to take down the reigning Super Bowl champions. However, it is set to be a great matchup to open up the 2023 regular season.
