Recently, Ndamukong Suh made it very clear that he believed who many had pegged as the newest Super Bowl contenders were vastly overrated. On the Rich Eisen Show, the two were discussing Suh’s potential landing spots in free agency. He has played in the past three Super Bowls and has played a very important role on each team.
When asked about potentially joining the New York Jets and what he thought about them, he was quoted as saying, “When Aaron Rodgers and that deal transpires, do I believe they will be a Super Bowl contender? No. That division is very, very difficult. I don’t even think if Aaron Rodgers goes there, will they be the top team in that division”.
Despite Suh making it clear that even with Rodgers on the team, he did not think the Jets would amount to much, this could come as a result of the rivalry that the two had years ago. For five seasons, Suh was a member of the Detroit Lions while Rodgers was the franchise quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.
With the two teams being division rivals, things there was no love between the two. Even today, Suh still holds a grudge against Rodgers. During the 2022 regular season while Suh was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, he was quoted as saying, “Aaron is very, very smart. He gets rid of the ball. He’ll run to the sideline, then look at you and laugh as he throws the ball out of bounds so you can’t get a sack. He knows what he’s doing. Obviously, he’s got a very fast release. Smart quarterback. No question, I dislike the Packers, very much so. Whether I’m playing with the Eagles or somebody else. Without question, I have all the desire to get after that quarterback and create havoc for that offense”.
After Suh’s quote about the Jets not being true contenders, it sparked a conversation on if he was right or if he just could not give Rodgers credit. All signs point towards the latter being true. While Suh was right on the money with the AFC East being an extremely difficult division this season, if the Jets are able to make it to the playoffs, even as a wild card, they have what it takes to win a Super Bowl in 2023.
The team is extremely talented on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Rodgers will have an immense amount of weapons on offense. Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson are both poised to have incredible breakout seasons in 2023 after having strong campaigns in 2022. Defensively, Sauce Gardner could establish himself as the best cornerback in the league, and the Jets just signed Quentin Williams to a contract extension.
If they are able to remain healthy through the season, there is no reason why they can not contend for a Super Bowl. While it will be tough getting the best of the Buffalo Bills in the divisional standings, New York has the potential to do it or they could go on a deep playoff run as a wild card.
