The NFL has officially released its schedule, and as is the case every year, some teams have the luxury of playing in prime time more than others. While there were four teams that did not have any prime-time games this year, there are four teams that lead the league in prime-time matchups with six. We will break down who those four teams are, which matchups on their schedules will take place in prime time, and how they should fare in their prime time games.
The first team that will have six prime-time games in the 2023 season is the Kansas City Chiefs. They will open the season with a prime-time matchup against the Detroit Lions, next they take on the New York Jets in week four on the road, in week six they face the Denver Broncos at home, in week eleven they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch, week thirteen they play the Green Bay Packers on the road, and their final prime time game will be in week fifteen against the New England Patriots.
If the Chiefs are healthy throughout the season, they should be able to win four of these matchups rather easily. The Detroit Lions are an up-and-coming team this season, however, with the Chiefs catching them in week one, all of their new pieces will not have the regular season experience necessary to beat a Super Bowl contender like the Chiefs. Along with this, they should be more than capable of taking down the Broncos, Packers, and Patriots.
The Los Angeles Chargers are the second team with six prime-time matchups. They will take on the Dallas Cowboys in week six, Chicago Bears in week eight, New York Jets in week nine, Baltimore Ravens in week twelve, Las Vegas Raiders in week fourteen, and Buffalo Bills in week sixteen.
Despite the Chargers being a very talented team heading into the 2023 season, they likely will only have easy wins in two of their prime-time matchups. Those being in week eight against the Chicago Bears, and week fourteen against the Las Vegas Raiders. The other four games that the Chargers will be playing in prime time will be against teams ranging from playoff hopefuls to Super Bowl contenders. While they have what it takes to win any of these matchups, it will be a very tough stretch in situations where the lights will be bright.
Up next also with six prime-time matchups this season is the Buffalo Bills. They will open the season up in prime time against the New York Jets in week one, the New York Giants in week six, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week eight, the Cincinnati Bengals in week nine, the Denver Broncos in week ten, and the Los Angeles Chargers in week sixteen.
Although the Bills come into the 2023 season as one of the top teams in a loaded AFC Conference, they will have to play at their best to win a handful of these prime-time matchups. While they likely should have no problems taking down the Giants, Buccaneers, and Broncos, there is no guarantee they will come out on top in their three other prime-time games.
The final team tied with the most prime-time spots heading into the 2023 season is the Dallas Cowboys. America’s team will play in prime time week one against the New York Giants, week five against the San Francisco 49ers, week six against the Los Angeles Chargers, week thirteen against the Seattle Seahawks, week fourteen against the Philadelphia Eagles, and week seventeen against the Detroit Lions.
Dallas is a very interesting team coming into this season. They will once again have a very talented roster, however, as a result of sharing a division with the Philadelphia Eagles, they likely will be fighting for a wildcard spot again in 2023. Out of their prime-time matchups, they should be able to easily take care of business against the Giants, Seahawks, and Lions. However, their other three matchups will take very convincing performances from Dallas for them to come out on top.
