It appears that there may be one team out of contention in the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes. After being shockingly cut by the Minnesota Vikings, the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos quickly emerged as clear frontrunners for one of the best running backs in the league. However, reports are alleging that the Dolphins lowballed him and he declined their offer.
While it has not been disclosed how much the Dolphins offered him, Cook has made it clear that he will hold out until he gets a contract that he feels that he has earned. It has been speculated that he will settle for a deal of around $5 million. With Cook being one of the top running backs in the league, this is not an outrageous ask by any means even with the recent collapse of the running back market.
In the past four seasons, Cook has run for at least 1100 yards and scored at least 6 touchdowns. Along with this, he has been named to the Pro Bowl in the past four consecutive seasons. He is a player that is capable of being a huge piece to a contending team’s offense.
It was very shocking that the Dolphins lowball Cook began their negotiation process. He spent his college career at Florida State and was even born in Miami. With him being a hometown player that the fans already love, it is surprising that the Dolphins did not do everything in their power to get a deal done.
Along with this, he would give the Dolphins arguably the best offensive unit in the league. They already have one of the top passing games when quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is on the field. The duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylin Waddle make life incredibly difficult for opposing secondaries, however, the Dolphins do not have much of a running game. Along with this, with Tagovailoa’s concerning stretch of injuries, it is almost essential that Miami picks up an elite back if they want to make a postseason run.
They find themselves in arguably the most competitive division in the NFL heading into the 2023 season in the AFC East. The Buffalo Bills have been Super Bowl contenders since Josh Allen established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Along with this, the addition of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, also makes them one of the top teams in the AFC.
If the Dolphins are still in the hunt to get Cook, they must do everything in their power to add him to their roster, even if it does end up costing them around $5 million.
