It appears that there could be some shakeup at the first overall spot this year in the NFL draft. After trading for the top pick, many believed that the Carolina Panthers would select Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud with the top pick. However, after some recent comments, the Panthers could be looking in a different direction.
Anthony Richardson began turning heads at the combine, and put together another impressive performance at Florida’s Pro Day. One of those in attendance was Panthers GM Scott Fitterer. He was very impressed by Richardson and said that “He’s more than a project”. This seemed to be in response to many scouts believing the sky was the limit for Richardson in the NFL, however, it would take a bit for him to find his way in the league.
If Fritterer truly believes that Richardson is ready to play as he is now, this could lead to the Panthers selecting him as the number one overall pick in the 2023 draft. He can potentially become one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the league if he is developed correctly. The Panthers have made efforts to bring in top QB coaching talent and veterans who can help mold Richardson. With the franchise’s success with Cam Newton, this may be more than a GM simply blowing smoke to the media.
