We recently saw the potential dark side of free agency as C.J. Gardner-Johnson settled to a one-year $8 million “prove it” deal with the Detroit Lions. Earlier on in the year, Gardner-Johnson turned down a multi-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles that likely would have netted him more money and kept him on the Super Bowl contending team to test his value in the free agency market.
Shockingly, there were no teams willing to give him a big multi-year deal. As a result of this, he was forced to sign a one-year contract with the up-and-coming Lions after Philadelphia inked deals with James Bradberry and Darius Slay.
Despite things not going his way in the market, Gardner-Johnson was quoted as saying “I have no bad blood” with the Eagles after how things went. It is being reported that many teams saw him as a risk likely after his comments about his former defensive coordinator following the Super Bowl.
The seasoned vet will likely have a huge impact on the Lions’ defense next season and is still among the best at his position. Along with this, he is also one of the most versatile players in the secondary that the entire league has to offer.
This could end up proving to be one of the most valuable deals made in all of the free agency this season and may be enough to propel the Lions to their first playoff appearance since 1991.
