With the Tom Brady era coming to an end in Tampa Bay, it appears that the Buccaneers have found the quarterback to lead them into the new era.
That player is the former number-one overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft, Baker Mayfield. The two sides agreed to a one-year $8.5 million deal. He will battle it out with Kyle Trask for the starting spot over the offseason, however, for the time being, it will be Mayfield’s spot to lose.
Mayfield has had a tricky time finding his footing in the league since being the top pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He started off his career strong, finishing in second place in the rookie of the year race, finishing only behind Saquon Barkley.
However, he would struggle through his second year in the NFL, throwing for 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. He would bounce back in the following season, having the best year of his career. After bringing the Cleveland Browns their first playoff win in decades, Mayfield would begin to regress and has still been chasing the high of the 2020 season.
There is a chance he could hit his stride in Tampa Bay. This will be the best receiving core he has ever had in his career. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are still two elite targets and could make life much easier for Mayfield next season.
This could end up being another volatile season for the Buccaneers and could be Mayfield’s last shot as a starter in the NFL.
