Devin Haney is in the process of selecting his next opponent which will determine whether he will defend his championship title or compete as a challenger in his next fight.
The lightweight champion successfully defended his belt by defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko. Although there are requests for a rematch, it seems likely that he will either defend his title against Shakur Stevenson, the mandatory challenger for the World Boxing Council, or move up to a higher weight class as previously discussed.
The 24-year-old is open to the possibility of facing Teofimo Lopez, who is the WBO’s super-lightweight champion.
Lopez confirmed that he was out of his retirement and expressed his desire to fight Haney next following a recent exchange between the two.
It has been widely reported that Stevenson is making efforts to push the WBC to announce the mandatory fight so that he can get his undisputed opportunity. However, he appears dissatisfied with the purse split offered by Haney.
Prograis asked his promoter Eddie Hearn about who his opponent will be in November. Haney responded that he will be fighting in October, which will not be possible for Prograis.
It seems that Haney will have to make a decision soon. If he chooses to fight either Prograis or Lopez, the lightweight belts will be left vacant and fragmented. Meanwhile, Stevenson will fight for the vacant WBC title.
