Sean Strickland stuns the MMA world, defeating Israel Adesanya to claim the middleweight world championship at UFC 293. Strickland, the American contender, dominated the fight, knocking down Adesanya in the first round and impressing the judges to secure a unanimous decision victory.

In a post-fight interview, Strickland exclaimed, “Is this real? Am I dreaming? Pinch me!” The unexpected triumph in the octagon left Strickland in disbelief.

Witness the remarkable upset as Sean Strickland emerges victorious over Israel Adesanya, capturing the middleweight title at UFC 293. The electrifying performance showcases Strickland’s dominance and solidifies his place in MMA history.

“Oh my God guys. Literally, never in a million years did I thought I would be here,” he exclaimed.

The Last Stylebender, a highly anticipated fighter, entered the match against the fifth-ranked middleweight contender, Strickland, as the heavy favorite. However, the former champion from New Zealand struggled to find his rhythm against Strickland’s impressive boxing skills and agile movements.

Now, let’s talk about the new UFC middleweight champion, Sean Strickland. Who is he and what is his current record after this fight? Furthermore, who could potentially challenge him for the title next?

About Sean Strickland

Sean Strickland, a renowned mixed martial artist hailing from California, USA, specializes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Growing up in Corona, a city in northwestern Riverside County, Strickland embarked on his mixed martial arts journey at the age of 14. Making his UFC debut in 2014, Strickland has overcome numerous challenges throughout his career.

Strickland attributes his inclination towards MMA to his troubled childhood and the adversity he faced in an abusive household. Reflecting on his upbringing, the 32-year-old fighter shared with UFC, “When you grow up the way I grew up — in a pretty abusive household — you’re filled with anger and hate, and you need an outlet.”

Despite facing expulsion from multiple schools, Strickland discovered solace and purpose when he first set foot in a gym. Even though the initial hits and defeats brought him to tears, they marked the beginning of a transformative journey.

In 2018, Strickland’s career was nearly derailed when a van collided with his motorcycle, just 45 days after his victory over Nordine Taleb. The unfortunate incident left him requiring extensive knee surgery. Recalling the moment, Strickland shared, “I woke up in the hospital, about to undergo knee surgery, and all I could think about was my career.”

During an episode of The MMA Hour in 2021, Strickland bravely admitted to being involved with neo-Nazi ideologies during his youth, influenced by his grandfather. However, he unequivocally renounces his past, emphasizing that his interactions with diverse cultures have brought about a profound change within him.

Sean Strickland’s remarkable journey as a mixed martial artist is a testament to his resilience and growth.

What is Sean Strickland’s UFC record?

Sean Strickland, a 32-year-old fighter, has an impressive record of 28 wins and 5 losses in his 33 fights. Out of those wins, 11 were achieved by knockout, while 12 were decided by judges. Additionally, Strickland has also secured 4 victories through submission.

Sean Strickland’s next fight

After a surprising victory against Israel Adesanya, the burning question remains: Can Strickland successfully defend the belt in his inaugural title defense?

Israel Adesanya, known as The Last Stylebender, undoubtedly sees himself as the top contender seeking redemption against Strickland. Adesanya showcased his resilience against Alex Ferreira, proving that he’s comfortable playing the role of the hunter. However, with Pereira’s move to the light heavyweight division, Adesanya’s sole focus will be on reclaiming his championship title.

Dricus Du Plessis had the opportunity to face Adesanya as the number one-ranked middleweight contender back in April. Unfortunately, negotiations fell apart when Du Plessis requested an extended leave of absence. Nevertheless, ‘Stillknocks’ remains determined to earn his shot at the title, and it would be mutually beneficial for both fighters to make it happen.

Following Strickland’s stunning victory, Du Plessis took to social media, declaring, “You should be relieved that I’m not the one stepping into the ring with you tonight.” He later posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), “It doesn’t matter to me; the belt is coming home.” Stay tuned to witness how this intriguing storyline unfolds.
