Craps: Origins and History

Games of chance that use dice have been popular since Roman times. However, there is no evidence that the game Roman soldiers played really influenced what we know as craps today. Yet, it does not mean that we know nothing about the origins of craps. On the contrary. It is believed that craps originate from an English dice game called Hazard.

From Hazard to Crabs

Hazard was a dice game played by Crusaders back in the 12th century. It shared certain features and rules with the game of craps we play today. The game survived during the Middle Ages.

When the first gambling houses were established in England, it was one of the most played games. English royalty and nobility particularly enjoyed the game of Hazard.

In the early 18th century, Hazard got to France. That’s where it was named Crabs, used to describe the worst roll of dice.

The Arrival of Crabs in the USA

The French took Crabs to the colony of Acadia, consisting of parts of the northeasternmost US state of Maine and Canada. When the English took over Acadia, renaming it Nova Scotia, French people living there moved southwards, taking the dice game with them.

That’s how Crabs, also known as Crebs or Creps, became popular among laborers on the Mississippi River. Interestingly, the game was played more among the working class than the elite in the US.

The fact that it was popularized by Bernard de Marigny, a nobleman from London who came to New Orleans, did not make the wealthy accept the game.

Simplification and New Rules

Bernard de Marigny simplified Crebs, making it more similar to the modern game. However, he was not the only one to tweak its rules.

In 1907, a new set of rules was introduced by John H. Winn, a dice maker. Among other rules, he introduced the Don’t Pass wager. Today, it is used in almost all craps variants. Because of that, Winn earned the nickname the father of modern craps.

Craps reached the pinnacle of their popularity in the 20th century. It was widely accepted by brick-and-mortar casinos worldwide, including Las Vegas ones.

How to Play Craps at Online Casinos

Craps is a fast-paced game with a betting layout offering multiple options. It can be intimidating the first time you see it. Bear with us as we will help you get started.

The good news is that craps online have simplified rules, so you don’t have to worry about who the shooter is, for example. All you have to do is to find a reputable online casino catering to US players, sign up with it and make a deposit. Of course, you must understand how craps betting options work, which is essential to success in this dice game.

But let us start from the beginning. Once you have created an account with a trusted US craps online casino and funded it, go to the lobby and find the craps game you want to play. Next, choose the bet you wish to place and adjust your stake. Then, click on the button to throw the dice. A craps round ends when a 7 or the point rolls, so you can keep playing the game until this happens. The main objective is to correctly predict the roll of two dice outcome.

Real Money Craps Online Variants: From RNG to Live Dealer Tables

While online casinos offer fewer variants than land-based casinos, US players can still choose from several versions of the game. All online craps games can be divided into two main groups – RNG and live dealer craps.

RNG craps come in a greater variety, though. So, besides standard craps, also known as Bank Craps, online casinos US also offer:

  • Crapless Craps: You cannot play the Don’t Pass bet here. At the same time, the rules for Pass bet are changed. As a result, its house edge is increased to 5.382%.
  • New York Craps: This game variation does not offer Come, Don’t Come, and Place bets. Also, a commission of 5% applies.
  • Die Rich Craps: The fast-paced game variant features a different table layout, and only one die is in play. In Die Rich Craps, the Pass bet wins on a 6 and loses on a 1.
  • High Point Craps: In High Point Craps, 2s and 3s are ignored on come-out rolls, while 11s and 12s win automatically. However, the house edge is slightly higher than in the standard version, at 2.35%.

As for live casino craps, only two providers offer the game when writing this guide. They are Evolution and Vivo Gaming. Both live dealer craps games use standard rules.

Now that you are familiar with online craps and what you can expect from its variants, let’s learn more about online casinos offering it.

Licensing is of the Utmost Importance

We pay close attention to whether an online casino is licensed in a reputable jurisdiction. Most trustworthy online casinos catering to US players are licensed in Curacao. A valid license ensures safety and fairness.

Mobile Responsiveness Is a Must

Modern online casinos should utilize user-friendly interfaces and allow players to enjoy their favorite games on the go. So, to include a gambling site in our list, we check whether it is optimized for mobile play.

A Range of Craps Variants Available

The US casino sites we recommend feature at least standard craps, available at RNG and live tables. However, we always strive to discover gaming venues with more variants, enabling players to choose the one they like best.

Plenty of Bonuses and Promotions to Extend Playtime

An online casino worth your while offers various incentives, starting with a welcome bonus you can get upon registration. Top-rated online casinos offer bonuses that enable craps enthusiasts to play their favorite game longer.

Banking Should Be Hassle-Free

Online casino deposits and withdrawals should be smooth. Because of that, we take a closer look at available payment methods, fees, and timeframes. By doing so, we determine whether a US casino site offers convenient options and processes transactions quickly without additional costs.

Online Craps Strategy: Tips and Tricks to Beat the Game

You should be aware that craps are a game of chance. However, your success at it mostly depends on the betting choices you make. Below, you can find tips and tricks to maximize your odds of winning.

  • Play even-money bets with the lowest house edge

If you are a beginner, you should stick to Pass Line and Come bets. With one of the lowest house edges in craps, these bets will give you higher odds of winning.

  • Go for Odds

Odds bets have no house edge, meaning the casino has no advantage over you. If you want to lay the Odds (the term used for this betting option), you can combine it with the Pass Line bet. For instance, you can place a minimum stake on Pass Line and then increase your Odds wager, which involves less risk.

  • Play Place bets on 6 or 8

Besides 7s, the dice in craps frequently roll out a 6 or an 8. Place wagers on these numbers have a house edge of 1.52% and pay 7:6.

  • Manage your bankroll

Money management is essential to success in craps, like in other casino games. Set your budget and win and loss limits, and don’t exceed them whether you are on a winning or losing streak. Chasing losses can be detrimental to your bankroll. The same goes for being greedy and not quitting once you reach your win limit.
