The Denver Nuggets recently clinched the 2023 NBA Finals in only five games against the Miami Heat. This was a well-deserved win by the Nuggets, and they were able to prove that they were not a fraudulent one-seed in the Western Conference.
Denver had a very difficult path to the Finals, however, they made their postseason run look effortless. They were able to take down the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Semifinals, the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, and finally the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. No series that the Nuggets played in this postseason got past six games.
In this run, they were able to eliminate some of the biggest names in the league. Amongst the list of players who had their season ended by the Nuggets include Anthony Edwards, Karl Anthony-Towns, Rudy Gobert, Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Jimmy Butler.
This would be a historic day for the franchise as this is the first NBA championship that the Nuggets have ever won. With all of the narratives surrounding the team throughout the season, it was great to see them put a lot of those storylines to rest.
Along with this, Nikola Jokic now has an NBA title and a Finals MVP to add to his resume along with his two MVP awards. Around the tail end of the regular season, many analysts called for voters to vote for Joel Embiid over Jokic for MVP because they did not feel as if Jokic should win the award three times in a row before leading his team to a deep run in the postseason.
With all the narratives put to rest, and the Nuggets finally getting the recognition that they deserve, they will have a huge target on their backs next season. Denver proved in the postseason that they are one of the most dangerous teams at home throughout the postseason. They made it through the playoffs while taking only one loss at home in game two of the NBA Finals.
With the team likely being able to bring back almost all of their roster into next season, they will come into 2023-24 as the team to beat.
