Top Three Landing Spots For Austin Reaves
After coming into the league as an undrafted free agent, Austin Reaves has shocked the NBA world and become a very solid third option on a contending Los Angeles Lakers team. With the young emerging star now hitting the free agent market, he is one of the most sought-after players in the class.
Many are speculating that Reaves will pull in a deal for around four years and $100 million. In the playoffs, he stepped up to be the third option on the Lakers. Along with this, Reaves broke into stardom during the team’s dominant run through the second half of the regular season.
While he does not have much of a track record of even playing in the league before the 2023-24 season, teams are rightfully sold on him, and there are three perfect landing spots where he could sign in the offseason.
The first team that could make a run for Reaves in free agency is the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio currently holds the first overall pick in the 2023 draft that they will almost certainly use to select Victor Wembanyama. The French seven-footer is arguably the most hyped-up prospect in the history of the NBA and for good reason.
He has a skill set that the game has never seen and if he can stay healthy, he has the potential to make an immediate impact. With him being coached and mentored by Greg Popovich and likely having Tim Duncan to learn from as well, he could end up leading the Spurs to a playoff run in his rookie season.
For this to happen, the Spurs will have to bulk up their roster a bit and surround Wembanyama with some other talent. Reaves would be a perfect player to put around him. He has the ability to space the floor, allowing the future first-overall pick to dominate in the paint. Along with this, Reaves serves as a very reliable source of offense if Wembanyama is having an off night.
Another team that would be a great fit for Reaves is the Orlando Magic. The Magic have one of the best young cores in the league. If they are able to add another young star like Reaves that has postseason experience, it could be exactly what the team needs to make a playoff push of their own.
Once again, Reaves would be able to serve as a floor-spacing wing and a source of instant offense for the Magic. With Palo Bonchero struggling to find his outside shot in his rookie season, having players that can be lights out from three and draw defenders to the perimeter is essential.
The final team that Reaves should consider is the Los Angeles Lakers. While the Lakers will likely not be able to offer Reaves the contract that teams like the Spurs and Magic can, they offer him the best chance to contend for an NBA title.
As a member of the Lakers, Reaves was the perfect player to put alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Both stars at times struggle to get things going on the offensive end, and it leaves a perfect opportunity for Reaves to have entire offensive possessions at his disposal.
Despite the Lakers being a championship contender, their offense is still run in a way that allows him to get a quality amount of shots per game. Along with this, Los Angeles runs an offense that is freelanced enough to allow him the opportunity to still experiment and develop his game.
