With another wave of NBA retirements out of the way as the 2023-24 season came to an end, there are some fresh faces on the list of the oldest players left in the league. Despite the age of some of these players, they still play essential roles on their team and may end up sticking around for a few more seasons.
The oldest current player in the league is Andre Iguodala. With the retirement of Udonis Haslem, Iguodala becomes the only 39-year-old in the league, and before the close of the 2023-24 season, he will his 40 years of age.
Iguodala is heading into his 20th season in the NBA. In that time, he has played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, and Miami Heat. Last season with the Warriors, he did not play a huge role for the team. He only played in 8 games and averaged 2.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from the field and 11.1% from three.
While his best days are behind him, Iguodala still is a key contributor for the Warriors as a veteran presence and almost serves as a coach for the team.
LeBron James is the second oldest player in the league heading into the 2023-24 season. He is set to turn 39 years old this season and is heading into his 21st season in the league. Throughout his 21 years, James has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers. Despite being one of the oldest players in the league, James has put up an incredible fight against Father Time and is still one of the most talented players that the league has to offer.
It could be argued that he is still the best player on the Lakers roster, even with Anthony Davis being on the team. Last season, James averaged 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game while shooting 50.0% from the field and 32.1% from three. While James is beginning to see a slight decline, he is still putting up some of the best numbers we have ever seen from a player of his age.
The third oldest player heading into the 2023-24 season is P.J. Tucker. Tucker is set to turn 39 years old during the 2023-24 postseason. Through his 12 years in the NBA, he has played for the Toronto Raptors, Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers. Last season with the 76ers, he averaged 3.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.8 assists while shooting 42.7% from the field and 39.3% from three.
At this point in his career, Tucker is a nonfactor on the offensive end. While he is a solid three-point shooter, he can go through terrible shooting slumps and rarely shoots. Despite this, he still served as a full-time starter for the 76ers. He is one of the top defenders in the NBA and has the ability to make life difficult for almost any opposing player.
