Three Free Agents the San Antonio Spurs Should Put Alongside Victor Wembanyama

With free agency right around the corner, teams are preparing to open up their pocketbooks and add some new talent to their teams. One of the most intriguing teams heading into the 2023-24 season is the San Antonio Spurs. They used their first overall pick to select Victor Wembanyama who scouts have said has the potential to break the NBA.

With him on the team and the Spurs being amongst the teams with the most cap space in the league, San Antonio could end up being a premier free-agency destination. There are three players that would be perfect fits alongside Wembanyama.

1. Brook Lopez

The first free agent that would be a great fit alongside Wembanyama is Brook Lopez. Despite being 34 years old in the 2022-23 season, Lopez would have one of the strongest years of his career. Throughout his time in the league, he has done an incredible job of adjusting his game to fit how the game is being played.

Lopez has evolved into one of the best three-point shooting centers in the league and was also one of the top defenders that the league has to offer last season. With Wembanyama coming into the league with a very solid outside shot, this would allow the Spurs to run a five-out offense, making it very easy for him to get to the basket.

Along with this, adding Lopez to the team would allow Wembanyama to play the power forward position and avoid guarding stronger centers like Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic.

2. Fred VanFleet

Fred VanFleet is one of the most sought-after players in this year’s free agency class. If the Spurs are able to add him to their roster, he would be a great player to put alongside Wembanyama.

VanFleet and Wembanyama would be a scary pick-and-roll or pick-and-pop duo for opposing defenses. Last season, he was one of the few bright spots on a disappointing Toronto Raptors roster. Along with what his game would bring to the team, VanFleet is also a player with championship experience that would serve as a great leader for an extremely young Spurs team.

3. Nikola Vucevic

The final big-name free agent that would be a great fit for the Spurs is Nikola Vucevic. Many of the reasons why Brook Lopez would be a solid pairing with Wembanyama also hold true for Vucevic. He is a sharpshooting center and a very solid interior defender.

This would allow for the first overall pick to play the power forward position, which until he begins to bulk up is best for his long-term health. If the Spurs miss out on Lopez, Vucevic is a player the Spurs must look into signing.
