Three Coaching Candidates For the Detroit Pistons

After finishing the 2022-23 season with the worst record in the league, they moved on from Dwane Casey to the head coaching position. While it was not entirely Casey’s fault that the team struggled as their star player Cade Cunningham suffered a season-ending injury very early in the season, he took the fall for the team’s very rough season. Detroit is now looking for a candidate that can put an end to the rebuilding era for the team.

1. Charles Lee Jr.

Charles Lee Jr. could be an incredible option for the Pistons to bring in as their new head coach. He has spent nine seasons as Mike Budenholzer’s assistant coach. While Lee Jr.’s Milwaukee Bucks were upset in the first round of the playoffs by the Miami Heat this season, he has still done more than enough to earn a chance at a head coaching job.

He is an extremely young option for a head coach at only 38 years old. Pairing this with the fact that it would be his first head coaching gig, it would buy both Lee Jr. and the Pistons a couple more seasons before there is a high amount of pressure to truly contend. This is something that is necessary for an extremely young team.

2. Kevin Ollie

Kevin Ollie had an extremely successful run as a head coach in the NCAA, taking the University of Connecticut to a National Championship appearance in the 2014 season. Recently, he spent time in the Overtime Elite league where he served as the head of coaching and basketball development.

This role allowed him to coach some of the top prospects in this year’s draft, and with the Pistons set with a very high lottery pick, they could end up coaching one of the players that Ollie coached last season. In both of his big-time roles as a coach, Ollie has been tasked with developing talent and getting the best out of young players. This is exactly what Detroit needs right now with one of the youngest rosters in the league.

3. Chris Quinn

The final option that the Pistons should look at for their head coaching vacancy is Chris Quinn. Quinn has served as the Miami Heat’s assistant since the 2014 season. Through that time, he has gotten the opportunity to learn from Erik Spoelstra who in that stretch has arguably been the best coach in the entire league.

The Heat in recent years have done an incredible job of getting the most out of overlooked talent. With the Pistons having a handful of lottery picks on their roster, it would be very exciting to see what he could do with the roster.
