With the Memphis Grizzlies taking an embarrassing exit from the NBA playoffs in the first round, the team may consider moving on from head coach Taylor Jenkins. Teams around the league have been extremely cutthroat in their firing of head coaches this season. Around the league, some of the top coaching talent in the league find themselves searching for a new team. With that much talent waiting to be signed, paired with the lackluster postseason resume Jenkins has put together in his four seasons with the team, it could be time for the Grizzlies to move on.
Despite the Grizzlies not making it past the second round of the playoffs in their four years with Jenkins at the helm, it would be unfair to place all of the blame on him. In the 2022-23 season, the Grizzlies were appearing to be well on their way to a deep playoff run.
However, off-the-court issues with superstar point guard Ja Morant appeared to derail the season. While the team managed to stay afloat without Morant on the floor, it was clear that there was something looming over the team with all of the headlines beginning to take the forefront over the Grizzlies’ great regular season performance. With Memphis being such a young team, they are much more susceptible to letting outside noise cause their level of play to take a dip.
Along with this, the Grizzlies got extremely unlucky with matching up against a star-studded Los Angeles Lakers team in the first round. Despite the Lakers being the 7th seed in the Western Conference, they were one of the hottest teams in the league through the second half of the season. With the Grizzlies having another year to mature and experience the postseason, they could be a dangerous team in the 2023-24 season with Jenkins at the helm.
Although Jenkins has done a great job of elevating his players to being one of the top teams through the regular season, they have consistently fallen short when the lights were the brightest. Along with this, recent comments from Jenkins have the potential to cause a rift between him and his players.
After the Grizzlies were eliminated from the first round, Jenkins was quoted as saying, “We’re far from where we need to be from a maturity standpoint”. Whether what Jenkins said was right or wrong is beside the point. Even if Morant’s off-the-court issues and Dillon Brooks’ comments toward LeBron James had played a part in the Grizzly’s season ending early, this is something that a coach should not say to the media.
The Memphis Grizzlies find themselves in a very difficult spot this offseason. While the team has a very talented coach under contract in Taylor Jenkins, there is likely a better fit for the team waiting for them. Someone like Doc Rivers could be exactly what the team needs. He has been an NBA lifer, beginning as a player in the league before transitioning into a coach. Rivers has championship experience and is a coach that would be able to get a young team like the Grizzlies in line.
If Memphis gets off to a slow start in the regular season, or key players like Morant begin to voice their displeasure with Jenkins, it could be time for the team to move on and look for other options.
