It has been announced that Jaylen Brown, one of the NBA’s top players from the Boston Celtics, has agreed to a lucrative five-year extension of his contract. The deal, worth $304 million, is set to become the most valuable in the history of the NBA. Brown and his agent, Jason Glushon, met with Celtics management on Sunday to finalize the agreement. The extension will keep Brown with the team until the 2028-9 season.
Last season, the two-time All-Star had remarkable career highs with an average of 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. However, his performance declined during the playoffs when the Celtics lost to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals. In Game 7, Brown scored 19 points but missed most of his shots, only making one out of nine three-point attempts. Despite this setback, Brown was still able to qualify for the supermax extension after being named to the All-NBA second team, a first-time honor for him.
In the 2016 draft, the Celtics selected Brown as their third overall pick. Despite their consistent playoff appearances in every season since then, Brown is not generally regarded as a top-10 player in the league. Most experts believe that Jayson Tatum, a four-time All-Star and NBA first-team member this year, is a superior player compared to Brown. Tatum is set to become eligible for a supermax extension in the following year.
Brown is a savvy entrepreneur who has voiced his opinions on societal matters. In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, he asserted that sports are a tool for governing. He claimed that without sports, individuals would feel more let down by their place in society and experience greater frustration and tension due to the inequality of poverty and hunger. He believes sports offer a constructive outlet for our energy and are crucial for keeping children engaged in positive activities. Without sports, he wonders what these youngsters would do with their time.
