Indiana Pacers vs Orlando Magic NBA Summer League
The Pacers won their first NBA summer league against the Washington Wizards with a score of 91-83. Benedict Mathurin scored the highest in the game, with 27 points. This is unsurprising as he demonstrated considerable potential as a rookie last season in the NBA, averaging 16.7 points per game. Indiana won against Washington, with Isaiah Jackson leading the game with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Jarace Walker, the seventh overall pick in this year’s NBA draft, is a player worth watching in the upcoming games. In his first professional game, Walker recorded eight points on 3-13 shooting, but he had 13 rebounds and five assists. Ben Sheppard, Indiana’s other first-round pick, had only one point with 0-4 shooting and three rebounds with one assist.
In their first summer league game, the Magic lost 89-78 to the Detroit Pistons despite having two first-round picks in the draft, Anthony Black and Jett Howard. Black had a good game, scoring 17 points on 7-10 shooting, with five rebounds and five assists. However, Howard struggled to make an impact, scoring only eight points on 3-13 shooting and adding just three rebounds and four assists. Kevon Harris was the game’s top scorer with 21 points.
The Indiana team won despite being outscored by 19 in the third quarter. They have Mathurin, a skilled player on their team, participating in the summer league. The purpose of his participation could be to either give him more playing time or enable the coaches to help him improve the quality of his game. Regardless of the reason, Mathurin is expected to be the most exceptional player on the court in the upcoming game. As a rookie last season, he displayed great performance finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting. If he can replicate his impressive performance in this game, the Pacers should win comfortably.
The Magic have fielded their two first-round draft picks along with Caleb Houston, their second-round pick from 2022, who was originally projected to be selected in the first round. Despite this, all three players – Black, Howard, and Houston – have promising potential on the court. Although Howard had limited impact in the opening game of the summer league, it’s reasonable to expect him to improve and score at least ten points, considering how frequently he’s taking shots. Houston is a skilled perimeter shooter and can score multiple three-pointers in a game if he gets into a rhythm. Additionally, Black has shown promising potential and is a strong contender for Rookie of the Year. While his initial performance in game one may be difficult to repeat, shooting at 50% from the field is still noteworthy. The Magic will likely secure a win with these three players on their team.
The game will be closely contested, despite some solid players on the Magic roster that still need development. The Pacers have similar players, but their team includes Benedict Mathurin, one of the summer league’s standout players. I believe Mathurin will once again be the key player who decides the game’s outcome.
