The Spurs selected the French center with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. It can be argued that no player has had the amount of hype surrounding them entering the league that Wembanyama has amassed since LeBron James. Scouts are head over heels for him and have even compared him to this generation’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

With some seeing Abbdul-Jabbar as one of if not the best players of all time, these are huge shoes for the rookie to fill. However, with Popovich and the Spurs organization behind him, he has the chance of being a generational talent.

He has a skill set that the league has never seen before. While there have been some big men with guard skills in the past, none have come into the league as complete as Wembanyama at his size. He makes even some of the tallest centers in the league look like children, and if he is able to avoid injuries, he is almost guaranteed to be a great player.

Along with his ball-handling ability, Wembanyama has a strong outside shot and is almost impossible to stop around the basket. As a result of his height and wingspan, he can almost dunk the ball while still being flat-footed. Along with this, his wingspan makes him able to guard almost the entire half-court by himself. Scouts have brought up seeing him be under the basket when an opposing player caught the ball and closed out fast enough to block their shot.

Wembanyama would have been a great fit on any team that he joined. The Spurs will likely use free agency to build up the roster around him and find players that will mesh well with his style of play. While San Antonio may be a struggling team again next season, this likely will come as a result of a lack of help surrounding the first overall pick in the 2023 draft.
