The Charlotte Hornets used the second overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft to select Brandon Miller. Miller had a very strong season with the Alabama Crimson Tide and was the best player in college basketball. He would finish the season averaging 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 43.0% from the field and 38.4% from three. Along with this, he was named a consensus All-American, the SEC Player of the Year, and the SEC Rookie of the Year.
Miller would lead his team to the top seed in the NCAA Tournament, however, after a historically bad shooting slump through the tournament, the Crimson Tide would be upset by San Diego State.
Leading up to the draft, it was being reported that the Hornets were torn between Miller and Scoot Henderson with the second overall pick. However, they chose to pick the player that would fit their roster the best. With LaMelo Ball as the team’s current franchise player, it would have been an odd fit with Henderson also playing the point guard position.
Miller is a perfect fit for this team and will likely start as the Hornets’ small forward heading into the season. He is an elite defender and has a great three-point shot. This is something that the Hornets desperately needed as their wings last season were very weak.
Scouts absolutely love Miller’s game and some have gone as far as comparing him to Paul George. If Miller is able to live up to his player comp, the Hornets could be a very scary team in a few years. With Miles Bridges potentially rejoining the team in the 2023-24 season, Charlotte could make a huge jump after being one of the worst teams in the league last season.
