The Boston Celtics find themselves in a very tough spot this season. They are currently heading into game seven against the Philadelphia 76ers. This will be a very uphill battle for the Celtics, and with the Milwaukee Bucks eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Miami Heat, anything short of their second consecutive appearance in the NBA Finals will likely be seen as a letdown to the team.
Throughout almost the entirety of the season, there has been speculation that Jaylen Brown has had enough of playing on the Celtics and living in Jason Tatum’s shadow. Brown has consistently proven that he is more than capable of potentially being a top player on a contending team if he is given the opportunity, however, this will never really happen in Boston. Along with this, he has had some very interesting things to say throughout the year about their city and fans.
With the season likely ending in a very disappointing way, there is a chance that Brown could have one foot out the door and be ready to move on to another team. However, as they say, winning fixes all and if Boston can find a way to come back against the 76ers, they have a very strong chance of making the NBA Finals, in turn leading Brown to stick with the team.
If the Celtics do in fact fall to the 76ers, the Celtics likely will begin to shop Brown on the trade market. What they end up receiving in this trade will likely determine the future of the Celtics franchise for the foreseeable future. It will be crucial that they receive a player that can be a solid second option for Tatum. The way that teams are currently constructed, no player in the league is able to get it done on his own without a star beside him.
If they trade for a star player that is around Tatum’s age, this would be the preferred option, however, it is much more likely that they will receive a veteran star. What they must avoid is being encapsulated with the potential of draft capital. There are plenty of young teams that would love to add Brown to their roster, and their draft picks could end up being very valuable. However, with Tatum on the team, it is clear that the Celtics are a win-now team and must continue to operate with that mindset.
If the Celtics are able to close out the series in game seven against the 76ers, it is essential that they try to find a veteran center in free agency or trade for a defensive-oriented big man. Joel Embiid has been and will continue to be a thorn in the side of the Celtics if healthy. While there are very few players that are capable of stopping Embiid, it is crucial that the Celtics add a player that can at least slow them down. If they are able to do this, it would set them up incredibly to win playoff series against teams like the 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers.
Along with this, they must find some players that can come off of the bench and provide the team with some scoring. Currently, Malcolm Brogdon is the only bench player that has proven to be a consistent scorer that the Celtics can rely on. If they are able to make another final run, they should be able to find some quality veteran scorers who would sign team-friendly deals in an effort to secure another ring before they retire.
