Get To Know the Antetokounmpo Brothers

Born to Charles and Veronica, the brothers grew up in Athens, Greece, except for the eldest sibling, Francis, who was born in Nigeria. Sadly, their father, Charles, who shared Giannis Antetokounmpo’s brother’s passion for basketball, passed away in 2017. Francis showed his athletic prowess in soccer and began playing it professionally.

The rise to stardom of the Antetokounmpo brothers has inspired athletes and fans alike. Their incredible journey even became the subject of the 2022 biopic “Rise,” available on Disney+. Beyond their captivating road to success, their heartwarming bond truly shines.

Whether they support each other in interviews or showcase their sibling connection on their YouTube channel, AntetokounBrosTV, their love for one another is evident. They also collaborate through their AntetokounBros Academy, working together to make a positive impact in underprivileged communities.

Excitement is brewing for the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend as three Antetokounmpo brothers, Giannis, Thanasis, and their younger brother Alex, join forces to compete in the Skills Challenge. This dynamic trio forms one of four games between the three teams, alongside Team Jazz and Team Rookies, on February 18, 2023.

In the meantime, take the opportunity to get to know all five Antetokounmpo brothers.

Francis Antetokounmpo

Francis Antetokounmpo

Francis, the eldest of the five Antetokounmpo brothers, was born in Lagos, Nigeria on October 20, 1988, to his parents, father Charles Antetokounmpo and mother Veronica Antetokounmpo. While his younger siblings grew up in Athens after their parents emigrated, Francis remained in Lagos with his grandparents before eventually moving to Greece. Despite sharing a passion for sports with his four brothers and his family, Francis chose a different path and pursued a career as a professional soccer player like his father. He played in various Nigerian and Grecian leagues before retiring.

In addition to his athletic talents, Francis also possesses a musical gift. His middle name, Ofili, knows him, and in 2020, he released his official debut single, “Shekosi,” along with a music video.

Despite taking different paths, the Antetokounmpo brothers all share a drive for success and have made their mark in their respective fields.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

Thanasis Antetokounmpo

Thanasis, born on July 18, 1992, in Athens, is the second eldest of the Antetokounmpo brothers. He comes from a family of professional basketball players, with two younger siblings and an older brother.

During his early years, Thanasis played for the junior youth basketball and junior teams of the Greek basketball club Filathlitikos. He transitioned to the youth club basketball club, senior men’s team, and old men’s team as he progressed, gradually progressing to semi-professional levels.

In 2012, Thanasis officially started his professional career with Filathlitikos, initially playing in the Greek minor leagues. His talent caught the attention of the Delaware 87ers, who selected him as the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NBA Development League Draft. Later on, in 2014, he joined the Westchester Knicks.

Thanasis signed a two-year contract with the renowned Panathinaikos in the EuroLeague before joining the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks organization in 2019, where he joined Kostas plays his older brother Giannis on the team.

In 2021, he played a crucial role in the team’s victory over the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals, making history as part of the first trio of brothers to win an NBA championship. They etched their names alongside Giannis and Kostas in the league’s record books.

Beyond his college basketball career, Thanasis has a keen interest in fashion and has been featured multiple times in GQ. He also enjoys playing golf in his free time. When he’s not breaking a sweat on the court, he hosts his podcast, “Thanalysis”.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo

“Giannis Antetokounmpo, born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, is the middle sibling among the five Antetokounmpo brothers. His parents, Charles and Veronica, his parents migrated back to Greece like his oldest older brother and three siblings. Like them, Giannis is a basketball player, and a remarkable one at that.

Affectionately known as the “Greek Freak” by fans, Giannis embarked on his American basketball journey when the Milwaukee Bucks selected him as the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. However, six months before that, in an interview with GQ, he revealed that he used to sell things on the streets of Greece. He humbly shared, “My mom used to be in the market, and I would go help her. People don’t know about this, but I did it.”

While Giannis was already known upon entering the regular season of the league, his path to stardom unfolded in the subsequent years. He earned the title of Most Improved Player in 2017 and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2020. Notably, he became the MVP twice, in 2019 and 2020, and most recently achieved the ultimate feat of becoming an NBA champion in 2021.

“What I have become today, nobody foresaw,” he shared with the publication, which bestowed upon him the title of “Athlete of the Year” during his championship season. “You know why nobody saw it? Because I didn’t see it myself. Ask my mom. She never imagined that I would be an NBA player and have the life I have today.”

In his personal life, Giannis is engaged to Mariah, with whom he has two children. Their first son, Liam Charles, was born on February 11, 2020. They welcomed their second child, Maverick Shai, in September 2021.

In May 2023, two-year deal, the couple joyfully announced on Instagram that they were expecting their third baby. “Our dreams are coming true,” Riddlesprigger and Antetokounmpo captioned their joint post. Four months later, they revealed that they were expecting a baby girl.

Liam can often be seen cheering on Giannis during his games alongside Mariah. He was even present to celebrate his father’s victory when the Bucks secured the NBA title in July 2021. Although Maverick occasionally appears on Giannis’ social media, his life is kept private.

Kostas Antetokounmpo

Kostas Antetokounmpo

Kostas Antetokounmpo

Kostas, the second youngest among the Antetokounmpo brothers, was born in Athens on November 20, 1997, to Charles and Veronica. His basketball journey commenced in Greece, where he spent two years playing high school basketball before transferring to Dominican High School in Wisconsin. Notably, he earned the distinction of being named First Team Division 4 All-State during his senior year. Kostas then pursued his collegiate career at the University of Dayton.

Embarking on his professional basketball career, Kostas was initially selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2018 NBA Draft but was promptly traded to the Dallas Mavericks. Subsequently, in 2019, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kostas made NBA history in 2020 as a member of the team. The Lakers’ victory over the Miami Heat in the championship series marked a significant milestone, making Kostas the first Greek-born player to win an NBA championship. This achievement was later followed by his older brothers Giannis and Thanasis, who claimed the NBA championship title in 2021.

Currently, Kostas plays for the third division of the professional Turkish team Fenerbahçe Beko. Before this, he had a brief stint with the French basketball team LDLC ASVEL and the Chicago Bulls.

Beyond basketball, Kostas Antetokounmpo and his brothers have launched the AntetokounBros Academy, an initiative aimed at empowering underprivileged youth and helping them achieve their dreams. The academy serves as a springboard, providing access to sports, inspiring education, and scholarships to create opportunities in life, as stated on their website.

Alex Antetokounmpo

Alex Antetokounmpo

Alex Antetokounmpo

Born on August 27, 2001, in Athens to Charles and Veronica, Alex Antetokounmpo is the youngest of the three Giannis Antetokounmpo brothers and brothers. While being the youngest, he holds the distinction of being the third oldest brother and younger brother together.

After graduating from Dominican High School in Wisconsin, Alex deliberately pursued a professional basketball career overseas rather than attending college. He said, “I firmly believe that playing in Europe is the optimal path for my development. It will enable me to prepare myself thoroughly and be fully equipped for the NBA when the time is right.” Alex’s journey took him to the senior men’s team of UCAM Murcia in Spain before he joined the Sacramento Kings for the 2021 NBA Summer League.

In October 2021, he signed with the Raptors 905, the NBA G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors. Notably, he had the opportunity to showcase his skills alongside his three Giannis Antetokounmpo brothers and brothers, Giannis and Thanasis, in the 2022 NBA All-Star Skills Challenge.

Most recently, in July 2022, Alex was acquired by the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G League affiliate, in a trade. This move united the youngest Antetokounmpo brother with his older brothers, Giannis and Thanasis, within the same organization. Despite being relatively new to the league, Alex has the support of his brothers.

“I definitely believe Alex has the potential to surpass me,” remarked Giannis to Bleacher Report in 2019. “He remains motivated and driven. That’s what sets him apart. He never settles.”

Like how many brothers there are to his siblings, the family holds immense significance for Alex. Above all else, he emphasized to ESPN that living up to their father’s legacy is the family’s primary concern. Alex stated, “If there’s one goal we must fulfill in life, how many brothers, what family means it’s that.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo, born to Charles Antetokounmpo and Veronica Antetokounmpo, is a basketball superstar known for his remarkable skills on the court. His mother, Veronica Antetokounmpo, was a professional high jumper in Nigeria. Giannis has expressed his deep gratitude to her for being the rock of their family, especially after the passing of his father.

Her unwavering support and love played a significant role in Giannis signing a groundbreaking $228,000,000 contract with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021. He dedicated his first MVP trophy to her, acknowledging her immense influence and impact on his life.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s father, the late Charles Antetokounmpo, was a Nigerian footballer who played a vital part in his upbringing. Although his father had hoped Giannis would follow in his football footsteps, he wholeheartedly supported Giannis’ dreams of becoming a basketball player.

Sadly, Charles Antetokounmpo died from a heart attack on September 29, 2017. Despite the loss, Giannis cherishes the memories and values instilled by his father, which continue to shape his journey both on and off the court.
