With the draft right around the corner, the rumor mill has been working overtime. While there is zero chance that the San Antonio Spurs give up their number one overall pick that they will use to select Victor Wembanyama, they could make a low-stakes deal that lands them a second option to pair Wembanyama with.
A mock trade has picked up traction that sent Doug McDermott to the Brooklyn Nets, and the San Antonio Spurs would receive Ben Simmons. Along with this, the Nets would receive the more favorable option of a first-round pick swap. For the Spurs, they would not have to give up a lot for what many believed would be a generational talent when he was the first overall pick.
On the flip side, the Nets would be able to free up cap space to either trade for a star player or make a move in free agency. Currently, Simmons has arguably the worst contract in the entire NBA. He is one of the better-paid players in the NBA despite being riddled with injuries throughout the majority of his professional career.
If Simmons is able to recover from his back injury, there is no head coach in the league better suited to make him see his potential than Greg Popovich. Coach Pop is arguably the best coach in the history of the league, and has managed to bring the best out of a plethora of the players that have graced his roster. If Simmons came to San Antonio healthy and hungry to put any rumors of him being a bust to rest, this could be an incredible deal for the Spurs.
Along with this, with Wembanyama having an incredible outside game, Simmons’ inability to shoot threes would not be detrimental to the team’s court spacing. While this deal is just a rumor for the time being, it should be something that the Spurs seriously look into if the opportunity presents itself.
