Shortly after being swept in the Western Conference Finals, LeBron James shocked the NBA world when he was asked about potentially calling it a career. This came shortly after his fellow teammate and 2003 draftee Carmelo Anthony also retired. James was quoted as saying, “Just personally, with me moving forward with the game of basketball, I just got a lot to think about”.
This quote sparked many to believe that James could be retiring, however, that is unlikely to happen. At most, James could miss the 2023-24 season to rest and recover from a potential impending surgery on his injured foot that had been nagging him through the tail end of the season.
In all actuality, James likely will be back and playing when the 2023-24 postseason rolls around. If he does end up needing surgery, there is a chance that he will miss a considerable amount of games through the regular season. However, if the Los Angeles Lakers are able to retool their team to better matchup against elite teams like the Denver Nuggets, James will definitely be back and contending for another championship.
Although the series did not end up going his way, James closed out the series extremely strongly. Despite having some tough performances early on in the series, the 20-year pro did everything in his power to extend the series. He finished the closeout game with 40 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists, and two steals while shooting 60.0% from the field and 57.1% from three.
It is clear that even with the unfathomable amount of miles he has put on his legs and the minutes he has logged in the NBA, James still has plenty in the tank. While things were not always the prettiest through the season, and it is clear that LeBron has lost a step, he is still one of the best players in the league. He admitted this himself when he was quoted as saying, “I’m still better than 90% of the NBA, maybe 95%”.
