Durant played a role in removing marijuana from the NBA’s banned substance list, even though he claims not to be a pioneer in this area. Durant has been pushing for this change since 2020 and has invested in several cannabis-related businesses.
reported by Shams Charania earlier this year, this statement has been included in the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NBA and the NBPA. During the CNBC and Boardroom’s inaugural Game Plan sports business conference in Los Angeles this week, Durant expressed his enjoyment of using cannabis, stating “It’s as simple as that.”
In the 2019-20 season, the NBA stopped randomly testing players for marijuana, and the drug has now been officially removed from the league’s anti-drug testing program. This change was initiated when the NBA resumed play in a bubble in Orlando after a pandemic-induced break.
On Tuesday, Durant talked about his conversation with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. He mentioned that he asked Silver to remove marijuana from the list of banned substances. Durant believes that attitudes towards marijuana have changed, and it’s no longer viewed as negatively as it once was.
Durant shared that he and Silver had a conversation about the use of marijuana in the NBA and both agreed that it does not have a negative impact on players. Durant stated that Silver was already aware of the topic as he could sense it when Durant entered the room. According to Durant, marijuana use is prevalent among NBA players and is viewed similarly to wine.
